The 17th-century chapel was built on the ruins of a former Cistercian monastery destroyed in the 14th century by idle armed bands during the Hundred Years' War. It may well date back to the 12th century.

In Provençal, "mueio" refers to a spring, or a pond in the middle of a meadow, and this is probably the origin of the word "Demueyes" which describes the Saint-Pierre chapel. Indeed, the site boasts a beautiful spring that was once said to cure many illnesses. A piece of cloth belonging to the sick person was soaked in the spring and then deposited in a nearby anthropomorphic tomb (hollowed out in the shape of a human body).

Legend also referred to this tomb as that of Saint-Pierre, reinforcing the sacred nature of the site.
