Saint-Lawrence Oratory

BAUDUEN

Saint Lawrence is the patron saint of shepherds and protects the flocks. The oratory dedicated to him reminds us of the importance of this activity in the region. The presence of briquettes testifies to the popular origin of the numerous oratories of Provence.

The niche of the oratory, traditionally housing the effigy of the saint, has the particularity of being made of brick. This ordinary material bears witness to the popular origin of the many oratories in Provence.

The lower part of the oratory is made of squared and levelled limestone rubble masonry on the front side, and alluvial stone at the back, all of which is plastered with mortar. The upper part, built in bricks, has a niche formed by a low arch. The pillar has a white marble plaque engraved: "Mission, June 1960". The niche is crowned by a row of limestone rubble, covered by a pyramidal concrete roof topped by a wrought iron cross. A cross can be seen inside the niche.
In 1960, it was restored by its owner Mrs Longeret-Sappe, from Cannes. The base was rebuilt, the niche and the roof were restored and a cross was placed, as well as a marble plaque with the inscription "Mission Juin - 1960".
It was restored in 2019-2020, by the commune. A gate was added to close the niche.
Before the construction of the dam and the impoundment of the lake, which covered part of the village's cultivated land in 1974, there were twelve oratories in Bauduen.
One of them was rebuilt, near the parish church, in memory of Saint-Lambert, a native of the village and bishop of Vence in the 12th century. Saint-Lambert, whose feast day is on 26 May and 13 September, is the patron saint of Bauduen. (PNRV).
