When the lights go out, nature lights up… Discover the Starry Sky of the Villages of the Lakes and Gorges of Verdon

Wednesday 18 February 2026

Set at altitude, preserved and naturally spared from light pollution, the Lakes and Gorges of Verdon area offers exceptional conditions for stargazing. This remarkable environment, ideal for observing the night sky, has recently seen its commitment officially recognized with the “Starry Towns and Villages” label awarded to five of its municipalities.

Driven by the strong commitment of the villages and supported by the Parc naturel régional du Verdon, this initiative rewards the efforts made to reduce nighttime lighting and preserve the quality of the night sky. Aups, Trigance, Tourtour and Villecroze now join Brenon, which has held the label since 2021. Together, they affirm the identity of a territory committed to creating darker, more beautiful nights—for the benefit of nature and stargazing enthusiasts alike.

This recognition is also accompanied by several major events and key dates in 2026, detailed at the end of this article.

Why does this distinction matter?

The “Starry Towns and Villages” label recognizes concrete actions taken by local authorities, including:

  • •  Adapting and optimizing public lighting to limit light spill toward the sky and natural areas
  • •  Reducing light pollution, benefiting wildlife, plant life, and human health
  • •  Thoughtful nighttime light shut-offs, encouraging energy savings
  • •  Public outreach and awareness through talks and media coverage
  • •  Organizing events that highlight the beauty of the night sky

These efforts help preserve an outstanding quality night sky, ideal for biodiversity as well as for stargazing—whether for residents or visitors. Our villages are thus becoming prime destinations for the development of astrotourism.

Focus on our five committed villages

Brenon

The first municipality in the area to receive the “Starry Towns and Villages” label in 2021, Brenon is a true pioneer in protecting the night sky. Perched at 900 meters (2,950 ft) above sea level, this authentic and unspoiled village offers exceptionally clear nights, perfect for stargazing, along with days shaped by hiking and quiet contemplation of nature.

Aups

A must-see Provençal village in Upper Var and the Verdon region, Aups blends heritage, friendliness, and natural landscapes. Here, nights are gentle and filled with stars. In winter, when the skies are at their clearest, Aups becomes the truffle capital and a major center of regional gastronomy—offering a unique experience for epicureans who also love the stars.

Trigance

Overlooking the Verdon valley from its rocky outcrop, Trigance delivers breathtaking nighttime views. Its historic lanes and surrounding hills merge seamlessly with the starry sky, now officially recognized through the label.

Tourtour

Nicknamed “the village in the sky,” Tourtour stands out for its spectacular 360° panoramas, from dusk to dawn. Its commitment to night-sky-friendly lighting and biodiversity makes it an ideal stop for astronomy lovers.

Villecroze

With its caves, old quarters, and surrounding vineyards, Villecroze combines historic charm with peaceful nights. The “Starry Towns and Villages” label further enhances the appeal of this authentic village for those wishing to observe the Provençal sky under optimal conditions.

A boost for sustainable tourism

This label is far more than a symbolic recognition: it is part of a broader sustainable development approach and a strategy to promote year-round tourism. It attracts visitors who value natural landscapes, authentic experiences, and a gentle way of life in the heart of the Verdon.

For astronomy enthusiasts as well as travelers and holidaymakers in search of unique moments, our villages are becoming must-see destinations.

Must-see astronomy events in 2026

One exceptional astronomical event should already be marked on your calendar: on August 12, 2026, a near-total solar eclipse will be visible in the sky. This rare phenomenon has not occurred since August 11, 1999, when a total solar eclipse left a lasting impression in France. On that day, the Moon will align between the Earth and the Sun, masking most of our star.

Beginning in Siberia, the eclipse will cross Greenland and Iceland before reaching Western Europe in the late afternoon. In southern France, particularly in Provence, darkness will reach 96%. As with all such events, observation must be carried out using special protective glasses to safeguard eyesight. A truly unique opportunity, as the next solar eclipse visible in France will not occur until September 3, 2081.

The Verdon Astronomical Nights (NAV) will make their much-anticipated return over the Ascension Day weekend, from May 14 to 17, 2026, in Tourtour—one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Organized by the Astro Verdon association, this second edition will take the form of a true astronomy festival: a large star party open to all enthusiasts, from Thursday afternoon to Sunday at noon. The event will take place on a dedicated municipal site, with food services available on-site.

As with any star party, accommodation will be in tents, vans, or camper vans. Nearby rooms and holiday rentals will also be available for those seeking more comfort.

Over four days and three nights, participants will enjoy a rich and varied program: lectures, hands-on workshops, daytime solar observations, children’s activities, equipment testing, and evening telescope observations of the night sky. Conferences will be held in a new 250-seat multipurpose hall near the observation site and will be followed each evening by public sky observations.

Admission fees: €35 per person, €60 per couple, free for children under 15.
